ABOUT WORDS THEIR WAY
Words Their Way is a new approach to teaching spelling that allows students to learn words at their individual level of instruction and teaches them how words work. Your child has taken a diagnostic spelling assessment (for which they did not study for) to determine their spelling level. After looking at what students know about spelling, I have put them into spelling groups at their developmental levels. Each group will have a different spelling word sort. By studying these word sorts, students will learn to sort, compare and contrast word features in each category, make discoveries, become more fluent readers, and increase their vocabulary through word meanings. Students move through weekly word study patterns by doing in class activities, homework and ending the week with a word sort test on Fridays. Follow my Blue Homework Guide to assist your child at home. |
During Word Work, part of our Daily 4 rotations, students will be practicing their spelling words using a number of fun, interactive ways such as:
* Stamp It - use letter stamps to stamp out their words into their Word Work duo tang * Stencils - use letter stencils to spell out their words into their journal * Magnets - use magnets to spell words using similiar weekly phonics pattern and write words in their journal *Type and Write - use keyboards to type their words, then write them *Duotang work - paper and pencil practice * File Folder games * Rainbow - use three crayons to write their words * Sand Spell - pencil boxes with sand and a pencil (or use their finger) to write their words in * Handwriting - dry-erase boards to practice words then write in journal * Magazine Hunt - look for their words in a magazine or use letters to spell out words and glue into journal * Spelling Sort - sort word cards on a pocket chart how ever they want then write chart into their journals and include other words that fit into their sort * Dictionary - find their words in a dictionary and write the word, definition and page number in journal *Plus many more! |
